Commission 42 began life as Photometric Double Stars in 1948 at the 7th General Assembly in Zurich, under the presidency of Zdenek Kopal. As early as 1961, then General Secretary Lukas Plaut recommended a merger between C42 and C26, Double Stars, one of the original 32 commissions going back to 1919-22 (first president Aitken, assistant director at Lick). C42 became Close Binary Stars in 1970, at the 14th GA in Brighton (the first one I attended). Table 1 shows the presidents of C42, and vice presidents, from when the office started, through the history of the Commission.

Commission 42 (C42) co-organized, together with Commission 27 (C27) and Division V (Div V) as a whole, a full day of science and business sessions that were held on 24 August 2012. The program included time slots for discussion of business matters related to Div V, C27 and C42, and two sessions of 2 hours each devoted to science talks of interest to both C42 and C27. In addition, we had a joint session between Div IV and Div V motivated by the proposal to reformulate the division structure of the IAU and the possible merger of the two divisions into a new Div G. The current report gives an account of the matters discussed during the business session of C42.

Over the past twenty-five years, the technique of Doppler tomography has produced many 2D images of the accretion structures and other gas flows in a range of systems containing compact and non-compact stars, including cataclysmic variables, polars, Algols, x-ray, and gamma-ray binaries. Recent 3D images derived from the Radio astronomical Approach (RA) have revealed prominent gas motions beyond the central plane, and display the usual characteristics found in 2D images, as well as new evidence of tilted or precessing accretion disks around the mass gainer, and magnetic loop prominences and coronal mass ejections associated with the donor star. In this work, we have compared new 3D images derived from the back projection tomography technique with those derived from the RA method. In general, back projection produces sharper and more distinctive images than the RA method, thereby permitting a more detailed study of the physical properties of the accretion sources.

The present report covers the main developments in the field of close binaries during the triennium 2009-2012. In addition to scientific publications, there have been several opportunities for direct interaction of researchers working on close binaries. A number of meetings focused on more or less specific topics have taken place during this past years but the highlight for Commission 42 is arguably IAU Symposium 282 held in 2011 in Slovakia. The meeting exploited a strong connection in the methodology and tools used by close binary studies and the rapidly advancing field of exoplanet research. After all, exoplanetary systems are mostly discovered and studied using techniques employed by analyses of close binaries for decades. Modelling of exoplanet radial velocity curves and transiting planet light curves are just particular cases of single-lined and eclipsing binary systems, respectively, with very unequal component properties. As shown by IAU Symposium 282, the synergies between the two fields are strong and potentially very useful. Found below is a summary of the main scientific topics and conclusions from this very successful Symposium.

The data collection and data analysis pipeline for the study and imaging of interacting binaries is outlined. This process includes the systematic collection of time-resolved spectra of individual systems, data reduction including subtraction of the stellar spectra, application of tomography codes to reveal images of the gas flows in 2D and 3D, comparison of the observed spectrum with synthetic spectra of the accretion disk and gas stream, and application of 3D visualization techniques.

Three-dimensional Doppler tomography of interacting binaries has now provided some interesting perspectives of the gas flows beyond the central plane corresponding to the orbital plane. These images suggest that the magnetic field of the mass losing star influences the gas flows in some cases. Earlier 2D tomograms displayed evidence of gas flows associated with the gas stream, accretion disks, accretion annuli, and hot spots as well as evidence of magnetic flows associated with the mass loser. These indirect images have revealed the active environments that exist in the slow-mass-transfer Algols, cataclysmic variables, polars, x-ray binaries, and gamma ray binaries.

The science of extra-solar planets is one of the most rapidly changing areas of astrophysics and since 1995 the number of planets known has increased by almost two orders of magnitude. A combination of ground-based surveys and dedicated space missions has resulted in 560-plus planets being detected, and over 1200 that await confirmation. NASA's Kepler mission has opened up the possibility of discovering Earth-like planets in the habitable zone around some of the 100,000 stars it is surveying during its 3 to 4-year lifetime. The new ESA's Gaia mission is expected to discover thousands of new planets around stars within 200 parsecs of the Sun. The key challenge now is moving on from discovery, important though that remains, to characterisation: what are these planets actually like, and why are they as they are?
In the past ten years, we have learned how to obtain the first spectra of exoplanets using transit transmission and emission spectroscopy. With the high stability of Spitzer, Hubble, and large ground-based telescopes the spectra of bright close-in massive planets can be obtained and species like water vapour, methane, carbon monoxide and dioxide have been detected. With transit science came the first tangible remote sensing of these planetary bodies and so one can start to extrapolate from what has been learnt from Solar System probes to what one might plan to learn about their faraway siblings. As we learn more about the atmospheres, surfaces and near-surfaces of these remote bodies, we will begin to build up a clearer picture of their construction, history and suitability for life.
The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory, EChO, will be the first dedicated mission to investigate the physics and chemistry of Exoplanetary Atmospheres. By characterising spectroscopically more bodies in different environments we will take detailed planetology out of the Solar System and into the Galaxy as a whole.
EChO has now been selected by the European Space Agency to be assessed as one of four M3 mission candidates.

Two meetings of interest to close binaries took place during the reporting period: A full day session on short-period binary stars – mostly CV's – (Milone et al. 2008) during the 2006 AAS Spring meeting in Calgary and the very broadly designed IAU Symposium No. 240 on Binary Stars as Critical Tools and Tests in Contemporary Astrophysics in Prague, 2006, with many papers on close binaries [Hartkopf et al. 2007]. In addition, the book by Eggleton (2006), which is a comprehensive summary of evolutionary processes in binary and multiple stars, was published.

The application of tomography to the study of gas flows in interacting binaries has led to fascinating images of the Cataclysmic Variables and Algol-type binaries. Such detailed images are currently unachievable using direct-imaging techniques. Numerous images of accretion flows have now been derived from optical and ultraviolet spectra and they have been used to identify multiple emission sources including the gas stream, accretion disk, accretion annulus, shock regions, and the chromosphere of the mass loser. It was difficult to distinguish between the separate sources of emission since these sources have overlapping velocities in the Doppler tomogram. However, with the aid of a new spectral synthesis code, we can now systematically extract the individual emission sources to sequentially isolate the images of the disk and gas stream. With these new tools, we have begun to extract the critical properties of the disk and gas stream more accurately than previously possible.

Periodicities of radio flaring activity from the Algol systems β Per and δ Lib and the RS CVn systems V711 Tau and UX Ari were determined from a continuous 5-year survey. The radio continuum fluxes at 2.3 GHz and 8.3 GHz were monitored with the NRAO—Green Bank Interferometer for 2096 days from 1995 January to 2000 October. The maximum detected flare strengths at 8.3 GHz were 1.17 Jy for β Per, 0.034 Jy for δ Lib, 1.44 Jy for V711 Tau, and 0.82 Jy for UX Ari. Power Spectrum Analysis and Phase Dispersion Minimization were used to determine the periodicity of flaring activity in each binary. The strongest periodicities found were 48.9 days for β Per, 120.7 days for V711 Tau, and 141.4 days for UX Ari. No significant periodicities were found for δ Lib. The continuous survey has demonstrated that there are active and quiescent flaring cycles in V711 Tau and β Per.

Two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of mass transfer in short period Algol type binaries were performed using the numerical code VH−1. This code uses the Piecewise Parabolic Method with a Lagrangian Remap. Our version of the code also accounts for radiative cooling processes. The purpose of performing the simulations was to study the Hα emission from circumstellar gas in the Algols. Using observational evidence from the literature to constrain the gas stream properties, hydrodynamical maps of the Hα emissivity in the two systems β Per (P = 2.87d) and TT Hya (P = 6.95d) were made in both Cartesian and velocity coordinates from the simulation data. The velocity maps were then compared to Doppler tomograms constructed from observed Hα line emission in these systems. Since the tomograms cannot be directly transformed to maps of emission in spatial coordinates, the simulated Cartesian maps enable us to interpret the dynamical processes which produce the features observed in the Doppler tomograms. We find that the simulations produce asymmetric accretion structures with many features similar to those found in the Doppler tomograms of Algol systems.

The technique of back-projection Doppler tomography has been used to produce the first set of reconstructed images of chromospheric emission sources in the class of Algol-type binaries. The Hα emission sources in the Doppler tomograms include the gas stream, a sub-Keplerian accretion annulus, a quasi-stable accretion disk, and the chromosphere of the cool secondary star. The chromospheric images of several Algol secondaries (e.g., RS Vul, β Per, TX UMa, RW Tau) are consistent with that of the RS CVn binary V711 Tau.

We studied the circumstellar gas in Algol (β Persei) by analysing Hαdifference profiles (observed profiles minus composite theoretical (LTE) photospheric absorption line profiles of the stars), at 98 phases in the binary’s orbit (cf. Richards 1986, Ph.D. thesis, University of Toronto). The data were obtained from Sept. 1976 to Dec. 1977; with an average phase interval of 0.02 over the entire orbit.
There was a smooth change in the profiles from strong, redshifted emission just outside primary eclipse, to an almost flat profile at mid-secondary eclipse, to strong, blueshifted emission just before primary eclipse began. Absorption was detected throughout primary eclipse, and there were smooth transitions between pure absorption and pure emission. The emission and absorption had FWHM’s of ~200 km s−1 and ~200 to 450 km s−1, respectively; with line strengths up to 10% and 19% of the continuum, respectively.
